The ICC-CCIG Series: Trade and Health

  • Tuesday 28 September 2021 17:00-18:30
  • Online
  • Organisation : CCIG and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), in partnership with ICC Switzerland

The “ICC-CCIG Series” address major themes related to international trade with a dual purpose: updating Members on issues that are currently being discussed at the United Nations, World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva; and illustrate the way businesses, actors of world governance, civil society and researchers can successfully cooperate towards common global goals.

The ICC represents 45 million companies in over 100 countries and is the only business organization to have an Observer Status at the UN General Assembly.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has shown how deep trade and global health are intertwined and how dramatically a pandemic can affect trade : the virus has created an unprecedented disruption to the global economy with public lockdowns and protectionist measures, which had a direct impact on exports and imports, market demand as well as the ability of businesses to meet the demand as global supply chains revealed to be a huge house of cards.

It seems that governments and politicians are starting to understand that global health and vaccine supplies – which are now widely seen as the key to ending the pandemic – are a global strategic priority and that no one is safe until everyone is safe. As public investments are dwarfed by the economic cost of this global health crisis, how can governments and private companies partner to scale up infrastructure and production ?

Looking beyond the current pandemic, would there be ways to design sounder trade policies to benefit both trade and health status across the globe?

The speakers at this event will present the most recent developments that have occurred at the World Trade Organization, introduce the concrete steps that have been taken to ensure open and free trade, discuss the notion of public good applied to the health sector, bring insider’s testimonials and explore ideas of public-private partnerships.
